What is a MOF? Where to find the best artisanal products is France

Updated: Sep 3, 2022

A food lover, I am always excited to discover something new and delicious on my travels. During a recent market tour and cooking class, our chef and guide Cyril introduced us to an MOF or a Meilleurs Ouvriers de France. A distinguished and official government category of French artisan, since 1925 these craftsmen compete every four years for the title and recognition of MOF if their field. Organized by the French Department of Labor under the Organizing Committee for Labor Exhibitions (COET), the specialities range from food and hospitality to clothing and woodworking. Famous MOF's include the late chefs Paul Bocuse and Joël Robuchon.

Looking to find the best products in France? Look for the MOF sign or an indication of the tricolor (the French flag) with the words Meilleur Ouvrier de France. Chefs who have received an MOF will wear a chef coat with the colors of the French flag on their collar. The award is an official government status, and it is therefore illegal to wear the collar if not awarded an MOF. Offenders face possible jail time for the crime.

On our tour we visited MOF Laurent Dubois fromagerie (pictured above) on the Rue Saint Antoine in the Marais district of Paris. The small shop is overwhelming to a novice cheese shopper like myself. Fortunately, you have the opportunity to sample many of the selections and the staff can help you choose the best cheese for what you are looking for. Dubois was awarded his MOF status in 2000 and now has three cheese shop locations across Paris.
