About the film: A magisterial summary and final testament, Robert Bresson's last film (and quite possibly his best) transposes a Tolstoy novella to contemporary Paris to create a terse, chilling indictment of capitalism and modernity. When a young truck driver unwittingly passes a counterfeit bill, his crime sets off an "avalanche of evil" that leads to mass murder and, finally, to atonement.

A work of intimidating power and beauty, the bluntly titled L'ARGENT captures the moral weight of tiny gestures in brisk, precise images. Bresson conveys the cosmic evil of daily life through one of the all-time great soundtracks, full of the rustle of bills and the clink of change, the click of a cash register and the snap of locks. These noises make the exchange of labor and goods for money play like original sin itself. L'ARGENT makes us gently captive to the eternal paradoxes, social forces, and human impulses that constitute the weight of the world.

"Filming with his usual tranquil, austere feeling for the miraculous, Bresson still manages to make most other filmmakers appear hysterical over-reachers; at nearly 80, his power to renew our faith in cinema is as firm as one could wish for." - Time Out
